On a recent engagement, a drive past Durban’s King Shaka international airport sparked an interesting discussion about the business expansions around the airport and the big sign pointing to the direction of the Dube Trade Port. This prompted the client to ask – what is a trade port?

In an overview, Dube TradePort is a Special Economic Zone and comprises a precinct purpose-planned to drive industrial development in South Africa through the promotion and attraction of both domestic and foreign direct investment to this part of KwaZulu-Natal. On a business and tax level, operating a business in these zones allows the tax payer to get tax relief, including the reduced rate of corporate income taxation.
